"Animal" at the Musée des Arts décoratifs

When you're exhausted by the crowds at the Louvre, a visit to the Musée des Arts décoratifs makes for a refreshing change of pace.  It's actually housed in the same building as the Louvre, but you wouldn't know it from the much smaller number of visitors.  The collection is vast and wide-ranging, but is updated frequently.  Until October, the theme "Animal" (which somehow just sounds more exciting when pronounced the French way) is being featured in the galeries d'etudes.  A selection of furniture, tableware, fashion, textiles, toys, posters, and jewelry reveal the multiple ways in which the image of the animal has been incorporated into decorative design.  The exhibit examines this tradition from a thematic perspective: the use animals as material (skins, furs, etc.), ornamental form, and decorative motif is highlighted, as well as the various ways animals have served as the mirror of mankind, and as heros and monsters.
